Paper is cheap, city ephemera is everywhere, and the story of the street can't be painted in oil. A short defence of the torn edge.
Walk past any studio block in Industrial Area right now and you'll hear it before you see it: paper tearing.
Collage suits this city. The material is the message — matatu stickers, market receipts, obituary columns, clinic cards — all of it already carrying the city's handwriting. Nothing needs to be invented; it needs to be reassembled.
The receipts are the palette
Wanjiku Mwangi builds portraits from eleven months of route receipts. The ink fades differently depending on which kiosk printed it, so the skin of a face carries its own weather. You can't buy that in a tube.
