Lighting Art on Walls: A Practical Guide That Isn't Just "Buy a Picture Light"

How to actually light a painting well — the angle that avoids glare, why colour temperature matters more than brightness, and options at every budget.

A well-chosen piece under bad lighting looks worse than a decent piece under good lighting — this is one of those unglamorous truths that gets skipped over in most art-buying advice, which spends all its energy on choosing the work and none on the fifteen minutes of thinking that determines whether you can actually see it properly once it's up.

The angle problem nobody warns you about

The single most common lighting mistake is a direct, straight-on light source pointed flat at a piece under glass — which does the opposite of what you want, bouncing a bright reflection straight back at the viewer and obscuring exactly the part of the painting you're trying to illuminate. Glare isn't a minor annoyance here; it can make a genuinely good piece nearly unviewable from certain spots in a room.

The fix is angle, not brightness. A light source mounted or aimed at roughly 30 degrees off the wall's plane — coming down and across rather than straight in — lights the surface evenly while sending any reflection off to the side, away from where a viewer is actually standing. This is why dedicated picture lights are almost always mounted above and slightly forward of the frame rather than directly in front of it; the angle is the entire point of the fixture, not an afterthought.

Colour temperature matters more than most people realise

Light isn't neutral — it has a colour temperature, measured in Kelvin, and that temperature genuinely changes how pigment reads. Warm light (around 2700–3000K, the "soft white" bulbs most homes default to) flatters warm palettes — reds, oranges, warm browns and skin tones — but can noticeably dull blues and cool greens, making them look slightly grey or muddy compared to how they read in daylight. Cooler light (4000K and up, closer to daylight) does the opposite: it keeps blues and greens vivid but can make warm tones look slightly clinical or washed out.

For genuinely accurate colour rendering regardless of temperature, check a bulb's CRI (Colour Rendering Index) rather than relying on Kelvin alone — a bulb rated 90+ CRI renders colour far more faithfully to how it looks in natural daylight than a cheaper bulb at the same colour temperature but a lower CRI, which is often the actual difference between a piece that "looks a bit flat under the lights" and the exact same piece looking genuinely vibrant.

The natural-light trap

Natural light looks wonderful on art and is, over years, one of the more damaging things you can expose it to. UV in daylight causes real, irreversible pigment fading — this holds regardless of medium, though watercolour and unvarnished, unprotected work are generally more vulnerable than a sealed, varnished acrylic or oil piece. If a piece hangs somewhere that gets direct sun for meaningful stretches of the day, UV-filtering glazing (available as an upgrade on most framing) is worth the extra cost, and repositioning the piece out of direct sun entirely is worth more than any glazing upgrade can fully compensate for.

This matters more specifically in equatorial conditions, where UV intensity stays relatively high and consistent through the year rather than dropping off seasonally the way it does further from the equator — meaning there's no genuinely "safe" season to relax about direct sun exposure on a valued piece here the way there might be somewhere with a real winter.

Options at every budget

You don't need a dedicated picture-lighting system to get most of the benefit here. A simple, adjustable-head floor lamp or a track spotlight, positioned and angled correctly relative to the piece, gets you most of the way to what a purpose-built picture light does, for a fraction of the cost — the angle and colour quality matter far more than the fixture's specific design or price point.

A step up: battery-powered, wireless LED picture lights that clip or mount directly to a frame's top edge have become widely available and solve the "no nearby power outlet" problem that used to make proper picture lighting impractical in a lot of rooms. They're not as elegant as a hardwired, recessed system, but they're a genuinely workable middle ground between "no dedicated lighting at all" and "an electrician-installed setup."

At the top end, recessed adjustable ceiling spots (sometimes called eyeball or gimbal fixtures) aimed precisely at specific pieces give the most controlled, gallery-like result, but they need to be planned during a renovation or a ceiling redo — retrofitting them into an existing finished ceiling is considerably more disruptive and expensive than planning for them upfront.

Lighting a group, not just a single piece

Everything above works cleanly for one piece; a grouped or gallery-style arrangement needs a slightly different approach, because lighting each frame individually is rarely practical or necessary. A single, wider-beam wash light or a run of adjustable track spots — positioned above the whole arrangement rather than one fixture per frame — usually achieves a more even, cohesive result than trying to precisely light every individual piece in a cluster, and it's considerably simpler to install and maintain. The goal for a group isn't perfect individual illumination on every single piece; it's even, glare-free light across the whole composition, treating the arrangement as one visual unit the same way you'd treat its layout and spacing.

If the group mixes glazed and unglazed pieces — some framed under glass, others raw canvas with no glazing — check for glare on the glazed ones specifically once the lighting's in place, since the angle that suits an unglazed canvas can create exactly the reflective problem covered earlier on anything sitting behind glass nearby.

Getting the basics right beats chasing a perfect setup

It's worth ending on this: the difference between no thought given to lighting at all and even a modest, correctly-angled lamp is enormous — far bigger than the difference between that modest setup and a fully specified, professionally installed gallery lighting system. If you take away one thing from all of the above, let it be the angle rule, not the fixture shopping list. A cheap floor lamp aimed correctly outperforms an expensive picture light aimed badly, every time, and it's the first thing worth fixing before spending on anything else.

If you're not sure where to start, pick the one piece in your home you actually care about most and give it fifteen minutes of real attention — a repositioned lamp, a bulb swap, a small angle adjustment — before worrying about lighting anything else. Getting that one relationship right teaches you, by eye, what to look for everywhere else in the house far more effectively than reading a full checklist and trying to apply it to every wall at once.

Once that first piece is genuinely well lit, you'll likely find yourself noticing the same glare or flatness on other pieces around the house that you'd simply stopped seeing before — the eye, once trained on one good example, gets considerably better at spotting the problem everywhere else, which is really the whole point of starting small rather than trying to solve every wall in the house on the same afternoon.

Give yourself permission to treat this as an ongoing, low-effort habit rather than a one-time project to finish and forget — a lamp nudged half an inch here, a bulb swapped for a better one there, spread across a few weeks, adds up to a genuinely well-lit home without ever feeling like a weekend lost to it — small, cheap fixes, compounding quietly over time until, one day, you realise every piece in the house is finally getting the light it always deserved — not because of one big project, but because you kept noticing, and kept fixing what you noticed, one small correction at a time.

What to actually avoid

A few things reliably work against you. Overhead ambient room lighting alone, with nothing aimed specifically at the art, tends to leave pieces looking flat and under-lit relative to the rest of a bright room — the eye reads "dim" by comparison even if the actual light level on the piece is reasonable. Fluorescent tube lighting, still common in some older Kenyan homes and offices, tends to render colour poorly across the board (typically low CRI) and is worth avoiding near anything you actually want to look good. And a light source positioned too close to the surface, especially with an incandescent or halogen bulb, can generate enough localised heat over time to be a genuine concern for a piece hanging in that exact spot for years — LED fixtures run considerably cooler and are the safer long-term choice for anything mounted close to a valued piece.

Dimming and control, for rooms that do double duty

A room that needs to be brightly lit for reading or working during the day and calmer in the evening benefits from art lighting on its own separate, dimmable circuit rather than tied to the same switch as general room lighting. This matters more than it might sound — a fixed-brightness picture light that's perfect in the evening can be distractingly dim during the day, and one bright enough to register at midday can feel harsh and clinical after dark. A simple inline dimmer, or increasingly, a smart bulb controlled from a phone app, solves this without needing separate wiring runs for separate circuits, and it's a genuinely worthwhile upgrade for anyone lighting a piece they actually want to look right at multiple times of day.

For rented spaces where running new wiring isn't an option, plug-in dimmer modules that sit between a lamp and the wall socket achieve most of the same flexibility without touching the building's electrics at all — a practical workaround worth knowing about if a landlord's rules (or a lease's actual terms) rule out anything more permanent.

Covered outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces

A covered veranda, patio, or outdoor living area — common in a lot of Kenyan homes, particularly outside the coldest highland regions — raises the lighting question in a different way, because natural light there is often more intense and less controllable than an indoor room's. If you're hanging genuinely valuable or original work in a covered outdoor space, UV exposure and humidity both increase considerably compared to an interior room, even under cover, and it's worth treating that placement as higher-risk regardless of how good the lighting looks — a reproduction or a lower-stakes piece is usually the wiser choice for a semi-outdoor wall, saving anything irreplaceable for fully enclosed interior spaces where light and humidity are genuinely controllable.

If you do light art in a covered outdoor space, weatherproof or damp-rated fixtures are non-negotiable — a standard indoor picture light isn't rated for the humidity and temperature swings an open-air, covered space goes through daily, even where it never gets directly rained on.

The fifteen-minute test

If you're not sure whether a piece is lit well, do this: stand in the spot in the room where you'd most naturally be looking at it — sitting on the sofa, walking down the hallway, whatever's realistic — at the time of day or evening you'd actually be looking at it, and just look. Glare, flatness, colour that seems duller than you remember it being when you bought the piece — these are all fixable, usually for less effort and cost than the art itself, and they're worth fixing before you conclude a piece isn't working for you, when the real problem might just be the light it's sitting under.
