Interview Practice: Talking to Artists About Their Work

The difference between a conversation that gets a real answer and one that gets a rehearsed line comes down to a handful of concrete habits, not charisma.

Talking to an artist well is a learnable skill, not a personality trait — here's what actually separates a conversation that gets somewhere from one that doesn't.

Ask about a specific piece, not the practice in general

"Tell me about your work" invites a rehearsed, general answer an artist has given many times. "What happened between the first version of this piece and where it ended up" invites something much more specific and considered, because it's a question about this piece, not their career summary.

Let silence do some of the work

Resist the urge to fill every pause with a follow-up question — a genuine pause often means the artist is actually thinking, not that the conversation has stalled. Some of the most interesting answers come after a beat of silence you didn't rush to fill.

Ask about process, not just meaning

"What materials did you use here and why" is a real, answerable, specific question that often opens into meaning naturally, rather than starting with the more abstract "what does this mean," which can put an artist on the spot to explain something they'd rather let the work do.

Avoid questions that are really about you, not them

"Don't you think this represents X" is a question shaped to confirm your own reading rather than genuinely learn theirs — a subtle but real difference that most artists notice immediately, and that shuts down a more open answer.

Listen for what they don't say

Sometimes the most informative part of an answer is what an artist deliberately doesn't address — noting that, and not pushing past it uninvited, respects the same "one door left open" quality that makes the work itself interesting in the first place.
