Five community walls that raised themselves this year

Murals funded by twenty-bob donations, weekend print workshops, and the maths of why small amounts beat one big cheque.

A can of exterior paint costs about 3,500 shillings. A weekend workshop, materials included, lands near 30,000. These are not gallery numbers — they are matatu-stage numbers, which is exactly why small donations work.

The maths of many

One donor giving 50,000 paints one wall. Five hundred donors giving 100 paint eight walls and pay two young artists a month's stipend each. The second wall list is longer, and the stipend matters more than the paint.

Where the money actually goes

Every cause listed here publishes its receipts: paint litres, brush counts, stipend weeks. If a cause can't show you the till slip, it doesn't get a page.
