DAN KABIARU
My practice explores people, their environments and the experiences that shape how we see ourselves and one another. Working primarily in painting and mixed media, I draw attention to everyday lives, particularly those of workers and hawkers, while exploring ideas of resilience, identity, individuality, community and memory. I use reclaimed materials alongside acrylic paint, allowing the material and the subject to speak to ideas of value, circumstance and what exists beyond what we first see.

Mixed Media Collage
Torn strips of reclaimed cardboard set against poured, marbled black-and-white paint grounds and a single flat colour band — the material itself carries as much of the piece as the figure painted on it.

Acrylic Painting
The figures themselves are rendered in acrylic, in full colour, directly onto the cardboard fragment.

Worker & Hawker Portraiture
A recurring cast: cyclists hauling charcoal and sacks of produce, hawkers balancing hats, pots, and sunglasses trays, tea pickers, and mahamri vendors — Thika's everyday working life, subject by subject.

Cardboard Sculpture
Occasionally works fully three-dimensional — a seated figure built entirely from layered cardboard strips, mounted directly on a found carton.
